Private Lessons Or Group Lessons?

Private Lessons Or Group Lessons?

As an aspiring actor, you may have asked the question, “Are private acting lessons better than being in a class?” The answer’s not clear-cut, as they both have their pros and cons. We’ll try to sort it out here, so you can decide which of the two is right for you.

Private Acting Lessons

Of course, private classes don’t give you the experience of reacting to the performances of other actors. That’s an important part of the profession, so you need to find a way to work on it. Becoming accustomed to focusing entirely on yourself can lead to you dominating any scene you’re part of to the detriment of the other cast members.

Group Acting Classes

Group classes tend to be less expensive than private acting lessons, but you’ll learn more slowly. On the plus side, you’ll receive peer feedback and be developing your ability to socialize and improvise. Success as an actor requires being comfortable around others, including cast and crew members and extras.

Students may be reluctant to incorporate sensitive aspects of their lives into their acting when in a group environment. Also, you’re not likely to find a class in which every student is at the same level.

Much of the advice you’ll hear won’t pertain to you at all.
