Personality – A deep dive into the heart and soul of one’s own being.
What exactly is personality, and how can personality help guide acting choices and shape an actor’s perspective?
The concept of personality is actually a lot easier to understand and much more complex to understand when it comes to acting, performing, and creating as an artist.
Thus, an actor is hired to portray a character, but again actors are all human beings.
While actors create a character, they inject their own personality into the character, whether intentional or not.
In fact, most of the time it is unintentional and inadvertent.
However, human beings, by nature, are social butterflies and cannot help but just be themselves no matter what.
As an actor, this can be both a blessing and a curse. Often, an actor’s personality shines through (often too much) that s/he does not fit a role that is so far from their true self.
However, the personality shining through is one of the main reasons an actor books a job.
To break it down: An actor who has engaging personality and is a kindhearted, respectful, and an easy-to-work-with individual often books a job. Why? They are fun, unique, and their own twist on the character shines through.
Without identifying or jumpstarting one’s own personality, it can be difficult to stand out in a casting session, with a casting director, or from a tape sent to the producers, especially in this current world of self-tapes when there’s no in-person conversation or interaction.
Now is the time to let that personality shine through.
Let that personality sparkle on camera. Show that the personality is right for the role, but most important show that the personality is right for the crew, the producers, and the project. Create the lasting relationship through that effervescent personality.
