In-Between Gigs: Part I

In-Between Gigs: Part I

A new year is upon us, and therefore, there are many ways in which you can keep your acting muscles strong when you are not on set or actively working on a gig.  This industry thrives on productivity and being proactive, so while waiting for that next audition, gig, or booking, try discovering an opportunity:

  1. Create Your Own Content with Youtube.  Youtube is a huge purveyor of short-form and web content.  There are many avenues for making content, from cooking lessons to makeup tutorials to lifestyle vlogs.  Start-up costs are extremely low as all you really need is a laptop, computer, or phone with some sort of editing software (some specific editing software is included in most computers purchased).
  • Create Your Own Content with TikTok.  TikTok feels like the new Vine.  Even more short-form content than Youtube, creating short, comedic videos can help guide a new group of followers to your content.  That mixed with algorithms can help you gain followers quickly.
  • Perfect That Perfect Image or Video on Instagram.  Nowadays, most people take pictures with their phones and immediately crop and manipulate the photos to make the perfect upload to Facebook, Instagram, and other social media sites.  In between gigs, one way is to create a story through images on Instagram and follow different photographers that may be in need of models for trade for print.
  • Trade for Print.  Need headshots or portfolio images for modeling gigs?  Search websites and trade ads for photographers that might be looking for “trade for print” services in which they are looking to enhance their portfolio by offering free headshots or free modeling shots in exchange for your work of being in them.  Do your research with due diligence first and make sure the photographer is from a credible source or has references.
  • Watch Academy Award-winning performances.  Believe it or not, you can learn from books and movies.  One thing to consider is watching Oscar-winning performances from past years to see what made them so popular with the Academy, critics, and audiences alike.  Why did these actors win these Oscars?  How can you incorporate their WHY into your own performance?
  • Take Acting Classes.  Of course, one of the best ways to hone your craft is by taking acting classes.  There are so many different types of classes you can take based on your needs and general acting focus, but a class the involves scene work and approaches to the performance is always a great idea, such as The Heller Approach.
