05 Apr How to Ace the Audition
Have you ever been anxious about an upcoming audition? Unsure about how to stand out in a crowd of performers who are all just as eager to be selected for the part as you are? What you need are some tips for how to ace the audition.
How to Ace the Audition
The audition is like a job interview. As with any interview, there is the “applicant” or actor and the “hiring manager” or casting director, producer, or director. There will likely be many others in line for the role in question and many of those candidates will possess skills that are as impressive as your own. To ace the audition, you need to figure out what makes you stand out.
Some ways to leave a lasting impression include:
Arrive on time for your audition.
Have copies of your resume and headshot.
Keep your schedule clear on the day of your audition.
If you can, get a copy of the script in advance.
Dress appropriately for the role but try not to be too obvious.
You can learn these tips and more in a Zoom acting class. They don’t guarantee a call-back, but they’ll certainly help you catch the attention of the casting director.
Etiquette Matters
As part of putting your best foot forward, you’ll also want to know for whom you are auditioning. Having some idea of their reputation and expectations is very valuable for the aspiring actor. It makes a difference whether you’re going to be meeting with the casting director or the producer. If you’ve worked with them previously, this could also help you stand out. Be sure to read the audition details carefully so that you go in mentally prepared.
Also, be sure not to step outside the boundaries of acceptable audition behavior. This means no handshaking, hugging or air-kissing. No physical contact of any kind. This is an especially important thing to consider in these days of COVID rules and precautions. Unwelcome physical contact toward the casting director or toward any other actor who may be reading with you will not help you secure the role.
