The Truth in Acting
Isn’t it ironic that acting isn’t real yet, it must convey truth? It is every actor’s goal to convey meaning and emotion to audiences through a story. But it’s not enough that the main lead tells the story effectively. The character they portray must also be anchored on truth, in the sense that it is anchored on the character’s personality and experiences. We think that this is the defining characteristic of acting: that it is about truth and that it shows truth.
Audiences, or at the very least modern-day audiences, judge a film or a play through the actor’s performance. If the movie flops or fails at the box office, there’s a good chance the actors weren’t truthful to the material they were given. There’s a reason Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining remains a classic and continues to be revered as Jack Nicholson’s peak performance. There’s a reason Halle Berry won Best Lead Actress in Monsters Ball or Anthony Hopkins as Lead Actor in The Silence of the Lambs. These roster of great actors, legendary as they are, were not born as great method actors. They had to spend years and years perfecting their craft through acting classes, whether that’s through in-person classes or via Zoom acting classes, and scene study classes.
Here’s how you too can perfect your craft as an actor and, perhaps, someday look forward to your very own Oscar:
- Take zoom Acting classes. It can be quite difficult to continue your theatre education with the COVID19 pandemic still a threat. Don’t let this stop you from pursuing your dreams of becoming a sought-after actor though. Our brand offers acting coaches online and private acting lessons online to all acting beginners and professionals.
- Continue practicing on your downtime. Every actor always has downtime in between shows, movies, or gigs. The best thing you can do is to never let your guard down and always practice your routines and method acting techniques. Bring out the truth in your acting by constantly trying to hone your tools in the craft. You can also coordinate with your acting coach and get on Zoom acting classes when you know you have some free time.
- Build a network with other actors. If you’re just starting off in the industry, it’s really important to get to know the people in cinema or in theatre and build strong connections with them. You can get advice from them about acting, about auditions and projects, and about the people to collaborate with to build your repertoire.
- Learn from the legends. If you’re not fond of watching movies, now is the perfect time to learn from the legends of cinema by downloading videos or streaming award-winning shows. There’s a whole slew of drama, period pieces, psychological movies, and intense documentaries that you should watch to help you build up your skills and tools in acting.
It’s important for ambitious actors and actresses to stay at the top of their game by being ahead in their acting classes and private acting lessons. This sets you apart from the rest and equips you with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to be the next great Anthony Hopkins, Julianne More, Charlize Theron, Chiwetel Ejiofor, or Meryl Streep.
